Sunset at Kaiser’s Throne and Pelekas Village

Stone steps up to the Kaiser’s Throne lookout above Pelekas, Corfu

Kaiser’s Throne is a hilltop viewpoint above the village of Pelekas, about 4.5 km from Sinarades, and it is one of the best places on the island to watch the sun go down. Go about an hour before sunset, wander through Pelekas first, and stay until the light fades.

What Kaiser’s Throne is

The viewpoint takes its name from Kaiser Wilhelm II, who is said to have enjoyed the outlook when he stayed on Corfu. From the top, the land opens out toward the west coast and the sea beyond. On a clear evening you can see a long way in either direction.

It is a short, simple outing, and it works well as a quiet end to a day.

Pelekas before sunset

Colourful houses on a street in Pelekas village, Corfu

Arrive a little early and give yourself time in the village of Pelekas itself. It is a small, traditional village, and it is the sort of place that is nicest when you have no particular plan. Walk the lanes, find somewhere to sit, and then head up to the viewpoint.

Pelekas also leads down toward Kontogialos beach, about 3.5 km from Sinarades, so you can pair a late swim with the sunset. See our guide to the best beaches near Sinarades.

Planning the evening

A simple order of things:

  • Late afternoon: Swim at Kontogialos, or arrive in Pelekas.
  • About an hour before sunset: Head to the viewpoint and find a place to stand or sit.
  • Sunset: Stay for the colour in the sky, which can be at its best after the sun itself has gone.
  • Afterwards: Eat in the village or head back to Sinarades.

Sunset times shift through the season, so check the time for your dates before you set out.

Making an evening of it

The best sunsets are the ones with no rush on either side. If you would like a full evening, start with a swim at Kontogialos, change if you need to, and take a slow walk through Pelekas. After the colour has gone from the sky, you can stay in the village for dinner or come back to Sinarades and cook something simple in the loft kitchen. Ask us for current recommendations for where to eat, and we will tell you what we would choose.

If you would rather keep it quiet, go up to the viewpoint on its own, watch the light change and head home early. Both versions work. What matters is leaving enough time that you are not watching the clock.

If the weather is uncertain

Clouds do not always spoil a sunset, and they can sometimes make it better, with colour spreading across the sky. A very hazy or overcast evening is a different matter, and it may be worth moving your plan to another day. Check the forecast, and ask us if you are unsure. Because the viewpoint is a short drive from the village, changing your mind costs very little.

On windy evenings, it can feel cooler at the top than it does in the village, so a light layer is a good idea.

What to bring

  • A light layer. It can be breezy at the top.
  • A torch or phone light for the walk back.
  • Water.
  • A camera, or just your eyes.

Drive carefully on the way back. Village roads are narrow, and they are darker than they look in daylight.

Getting there from Sinarades

By car it is a short drive, and the viewpoint is about 4.5 km from the village. Without a car, taxis are the practical choice for an evening trip, since green KTEL buses are less suited to the hours around sunset. Check the current timetable on the day if you want to try the bus. Our Getting Here page has details.

Other evening ideas

If you would like to see more of the area, our Village & Around page is a good starting point, and our post on things to do near Agios Gordios beach covers the days around it. For a slower evening, there is the balcony at the loft, which is much calmer than any viewpoint at sunset.

Stay close to the sunset

Staying in Sinarades means the sunset is a short trip away, not the end of a long drive. The loft is a newly renovated studio for two, with natural wood, a loft bedroom and a full kitchen. If you would like to see Corfu this way, book direct for a lower price than on the large booking platforms. See our direct-booking offers.
