Best Beaches Near Sinarades, Corfu: Our Short List

The best beaches near Sinarades are Agios Gordios (about 3 km away), Kontogialos below Pelekas (about 3.5 km) and Glyfada (about 5 km). All three are on the west coast and all are a short drive from the village. We do not live on the beach, and that is partly the appeal: you get a quiet base and the sea when you want it.

A note on distances. The figures here are approximate distances by road, so allow for winding roads and use a map for your own route.

Agios Gordios: the nearest

Agios Gordios is the beach we send people to first, simply because it is the nearest. It is about 3 km from Sinarades and around 10 minutes by car. It is a long beach set in a curved bay with green hills behind, with a village behind it that has the usual beachside facilities.

Good for: a straightforward beach day, a swim before breakfast or an evening stroll. For more to do around it, see things to do near Agios Gordios beach.

Kontogialos: below Pelekas

Kontogialos beach and its rock below Pelekas, Corfu

Kontogialos, the beach below the village of Pelekas, is about 3.5 km from Sinarades. It pairs well with a visit to Pelekas itself and with the viewpoint above, which we cover in our post on sunset at Kaiser’s Throne.

Good for: combining a swim with a village visit, or ending the day with the sunset.

Glyfada: a little further

Glyfada is about 5 km from Sinarades. It is one of the better-known beaches on this stretch of coast, and a short drive further than the other two.

Good for: a change of scene when you have already tried the nearer beaches.

How to choose

  • Shortest drive: Agios Gordios.
  • Beach plus a village visit: Kontogialos and Pelekas.
  • Something different for day three: Glyfada.
  • No car: Agios Gordios is the most practical. Green KTEL route B10 calls at Sinarades on some journeys, but check the current timetable first.

Beaches on any popular coast are generally busier in the middle of summer and the middle of the day. If you want space, go early or late. A swim at the end of the afternoon, before dinner, is one of the nicest ways to use the day.

A week of beach days

You do not need a different beach every day. A pattern that works well is Agios Gordios on your first day, because it is closest and asks nothing of you. Kontogialos comes next, on a day you would like to pair with a wander in Pelekas. Glyfada is for once you have your bearings and fancy somewhere new.

In between, give the sea a rest. A morning in Corfu Old Town or at the Achilleion Palace keeps the beach a pleasure rather than a task. Our simple three-day plan shows one way to mix the two.

Timing your beach day

July and August are the busiest months, so the early morning and the late afternoon are the best times if you want room to spread out. Spring and early autumn are generally quieter, though the sea is usually at its warmest later in the summer.

The west coast faces open sea, so the wind makes a difference. On a breezy day, one beach can feel very different from another, and it is worth asking us in the morning which we would pick. Being a few minutes inland means a change of plan costs you very little.

Practical tips

  • Bring water, a hat, sun protection and a beach towel.
  • Check conditions on the day. The west coast faces open sea, and it can be livelier than the east.
  • Ask us before you go. We can tell you which beach we would choose on the day, depending on the weather and the wind.
  • Leave nothing behind. Take your rubbish with you.

Coming back to the village

One of the pleasures of staying a few minutes inland is the return. You come back from the sea, shower, and sit on the small balcony with something cold. There is a fully equipped kitchen if you would like to cook, and air conditioning if the afternoon is too hot to do anything but rest.

You can read more about the area on our Village & Around page, and see the loft itself. If you are planning a trip, booking direct costs less than booking through the large platforms, and it puts you in touch with us straight away. See our direct-booking offers.
