A Day Trip to Corfu Old Town from the West Coast

Corfu Old Town is about 11 km from Sinarades, or roughly 20 minutes by car, which makes it one of the easiest day trips from the west coast. It is UNESCO-listed, it is best explored on foot, and it fills a day without feeling rushed.

This guide is written for anyone staying near Agios Gordios, though we are based in Sinarades, so that is our starting point.

Getting there from the west coast

You have three realistic options.

  • By car. About 20 minutes from Sinarades. The simplest choice, but parking in a busy town takes patience, so allow time and be ready to park a little way out and walk in.
  • By bus. Green KTEL buses run between Sinarades and the KTEL terminal on Eptanisou Avenue in Corfu Town. Route B14 serves Sinarades, and tickets are roughly €1.50 to €5. Check the current timetable, especially for your journey back.
  • By taxi. The easiest option if you plan a long lunch and would rather not drive afterwards. Agree the fare first.

How to spend the day

Corfu Old Town rewards wandering more than ticking off a list. A rough shape for the day:

  • Morning. Start early, when the lanes are calmer. Walk the narrow streets, the squares and the shaded passages. Look up, as well as ahead.
  • Midday. Find a table for lunch away from the busiest corners. Quieter side streets tend to be better value and more pleasant.
  • Afternoon. Visit the fortress or a museum, or just sit on the Spianada, the large square. Opening hours and tickets change, so check current details on the official sites before you go.
  • Early evening. An aperitivo, a last wander, then head back before it gets dark if you are driving.

Why it is worth the trip

The old town is UNESCO-listed, and it is easy to see why. Its layout, its architecture and its mix of influences reflect the island’s long history, and you can feel it in the streets without needing a guide. It also gives you a very different day from the beach.

Making the most of it

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The old streets are uneven.
  • Go mid-week if you can. Busy days make the narrow lanes feel narrower.
  • Don’t overplan. One or two stops and a long lunch beat a packed schedule.
  • Combine it sensibly. If you want more, pair the town with Kanoni and Mouse Island, on the southern edge of town, or save the Achilleion Palace for another day.

Planning around the season

July and August are the busiest months, and the old town can feel crowded and hot in the middle of the day. If you visit then, start early, stop for a long lunch in the shade, and do your wandering again once the afternoon begins to cool. Spring and early autumn are generally quieter, which makes walking easier and the lanes less crowded.

Carry water and sun protection whatever the month. Stone streets hold the heat, and there is more walking than it seems on a map.

A shorter version

If a full day feels like too much, take half. Go in the morning, wander, have lunch, and be back in Sinarades by the afternoon for a rest or a late swim at Agios Gordios. Alternatively, arrive in the late afternoon and stay on for the evening, when the town is softer and the heat has eased.

Either way, it is a day that works better with a loose plan than a strict one.

Getting back in the evening

Decide how you will get home before you sit down for the aperitivo. If you are driving, remember that parking can take time, so it helps to know where you left the car. If you are taking the bus, check the last departure for your route so you are not caught out. A taxi is the relaxed option after a long lunch: agree the fare first and let someone else handle the roads.

Coming back to the village

One of the pleasures of this trip is coming home to quiet. After a day in town, Sinarades feels very still. Take a shower, open the balcony door and let the evening settle. If you are planning your week, our guide to Sinarades and the things to do near Agios Gordios will help you fit this day in.
